Today we had an special guest from Boston. She is Dr. Yu – Lan Lin. Sheis well-known in the states and I am glad to know that she is from Taiwan. In the class, she introduced the standard of teachers and standards of students to us and she also did some demonstrations on teaching. She emphasized on the important of language function and encouraged us to use the target language to teach. Some people may doubt the possibility of using the target language in the novice class, but Dr. Lin noted that if we believe we can and we will manage to do it and nothing is impossible. Dr. Lin regarded using a language as doing a performance. The piano player needs the coach to give him/her feedback to help him/her improve with the skills. It is the same that the language learners need the constant instruction and the feedback from the teachers to help them progress in the target language. Dr. Lin also mentioned the 3 routines in class, which are “ What do I see?” “What do I think” and “ What do I wonder?”
Here are some ideas mentioned by Dr. Lin which will be very useful in teaching,
1. Don’t let students for 50 minutes without changing the state. A joke: The bottoms are numb, the brain is also numb.
2. Learning needs to connect to students’ experiences. Knowing how much students have know and then decide how much and what to teach.
3. Teachers want students to be successful, to feel learning is enjoyable and believe in students, and everyone has the chance to get an A.
4. Influence students positively, believe in them and allow them to be successful.
